River Watching - With the Rio running the highest in 30 years, there hasn't been a better time to catch the white water rafters and kayakers navigating the surf and rapids. Driving down through the Gorge on Hwy. 68 you can pull over at various spots and check out these water rats. Drive the Enchanted Circle - If it’s been snowing, be sure to call NM Highway Dept. for road closures. Biking - Gearing Up Bike Shop here in Taos will give you great ideas on trails that are ridable during the mud season. The lower elevation trails are the best as they dry out the quickest- so try the West Rim Trail, Trail 18 and the Talpa Traverse. Call Gearing Up for directions - 575-751-0365 Tennis - The courts are open at Fred Baca Park, so grab a racket, some high altitude balls and hit a couple of lobs with your partner. Fishing - Call up the Taos Fly Shop for updates on the best places to throw a line. Depending on the weather, the ice flow and many other factors, it's always best to check in before heading out - call 751-1312. The Taos News has a comprehensive guide to the state's best fishing, look in the sports section for this guide. Feed the Fish - Red River Fish Hatchery to see and feed the fish. Locals will tell you they've been doing it for years. (575) 586-0222 Hiking – North of the blinking light, on the way to,Taos Ski Valley, the trails may be snow packed still, or the streams are too fast, high and cold to traverse, but there are still great hiking spots. Divisidero Trail or any of the hikes south of Taos (check out the hikes on Hwy. 518) or down to the Gorge will be aided by our abundant sunshine. Or, hike down to the Stage Coach Hot Springs for a nice soak. Location - Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River Recreation Area, northwest of Taos. Check out the great hiking books for sale at Taos Mountain Outfitters, Mudd and Flood or Moby Dickens. Pretty sure with a nice hello, the friendly folks at the mountain stores can just tell you their favorite spots to hike. Rio Grande Gorge Bridge- On US 65, about 12 miles NW of Taos. The steel bridge stretches across the Rio Grande Gorge, 650 feet above the river (the third highest in the US). Many park on the side to take photos and to stare down at the dizzy depth. If you haven’t been to Arroyo Seco- north of Taos, on the way to the Taos Ski Valley – well, it’s worth checking out. A blink and you may miss this quaint little village, which would be a shame. Stop and stroll around. Many things to check out in a small amount of time.

Little League Baseball - Opening day is May 3, so grab your mitt and head out to the fields for all the mitt action. Annual Yaxche Triathlon - Training is starting for Yaxche's EIghth Annual Triathlon at Quail Ridge. Open to Taos youth age 4 through 18, the training will run four consecutive Fridays until May 16. Participants will practice on the biking and running sections of the course, so a bike, helmet and running shoes will be needed. Registration forms can be picked up at Yaxche School or Viva Sports, participants must pay an entrance fee of $20 or sell 10 raffle tickets.
