If browsing the shelves of your local library or book store doesn’t always lead to books that possess the “commendable quality” required by a national award or best-book list - books for example that might “exhibit venturesome creativity… or reflect and encourage children's interests in exemplary ways” - then you might find the following lists useful!
2011 Notable Children's Books
Each year, a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's books. Books that have been recognized in prestigious Awards and Honors like Newbery, Caldecott, Geisel and other ALA awards such as the Schneider Family Book Award are automatically added to the list, so it’s a pretty comprehensive one and a good start point. Also has an archive of past winners all the way back to 1996.
